Education Through Art

The education system has been questioned without a doubt. Many students go in with a disadvantage before given a chance.

Consider a visual learner, if the education system has an orally dominated structure where does that leave them?

Scientific illustrator Jeffrey Mobley was one of those visual learners.

“Honestly in high school it was very easy to tell that our education system wasn’t the best. Schools assume that the education system is a size fits all. The majority of students struggled including myself and along with most artists that I knew,” Mobley said.

Starting from a young age, Mobley became infatuated with drawing. Admitting to not being the best at 8 years old, his dad (who was a talented artist himself) challenged him with drawing different objects around their home. With more challenges from dad and practice, Mobley became the artist he is today.

“Art became an escape from anything that wasn’t me and my sketchbook,” he said.

Most artists take a creative and free lance path throughout their life but not Mobley. After graduating high school in 2016, he decided to study biomedical art at the Cleveland Institute of Art. After graduating in 2020, Mobley joined UWorld in Texas as a scientific illustrator. He reveals that the disadvantage that he felt in high school was the reason why he pursued this career.

“I realized that other students and myself didn’t absorb as much information as the rest of the students because we’re visual learners. This is the reason why I have chosen scientific illustration as a career, to help test prep companies create stunning illustrations to better educate students,” said Mobley.

UWorld is a company in Dallas, Texas that creates test preparations for students in all levels of education starting at high school.

Mobley believes that by choosing this career he is able to help students that are visual learners like him succeed in their educational life, with something more effective than an oral lesson, which was something he lacked.

“Student education is my top priority as a scientific illustrator. I believe creating test prep products to educate students on AP science, chemistry, physiology and psychology can be efficient through visual communication,” says Mobley, “Every time I complete an illustration for the products being sold I always wish I had something close to it when I was in high school.”
